{"id":758,"date":"2015-06-24T15:07:12","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T09:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.lhasocialwork.com\/en\/?p=758"},"modified":"2015-06-25T12:12:34","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T06:42:34","slug":"guidance-on-traditional-education-versus-modern-education-at-sera-jey-secondary-school-southern-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/guidance-on-traditional-education-versus-modern-education-at-sera-jey-secondary-school-southern-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Guidance on Traditional Education versus Modern Education,  at Sera Je Secondary School, Southern India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the request of <em>Sera Je Secondary School<\/em> (of <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em>), southern India, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche travelled to the school, from <em>Drepung Monastery<\/em>, arriving there at around midday of June 13, 2015.<!--more-->\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-762\" src=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-1.jpg\" alt=\"Visited-at-Sera-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>In celebration of the 80<sup>th<\/sup> Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama<em>, Sera Je Secondary School<\/em> has organised a two-days Lecture Series by Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The inaugural session in the morning of June 15, 2015 began with the Representative of the Honourable Abbot of <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em>, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, the Director and the Principal of <em>Sera Je Secondary School<\/em> inviting a photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama onto the throne, followed by Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche, the Chief Guest, lighting a butter-lamp, thus official opening the event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-765\" src=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-3.jpg\" alt=\"Visited-at-Sera-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>There followed, while the ceremonial tea and sweet-rice were served to all by the Organisers, the recital of the extensive prayer requesting His Holiness to kindly live long. A choir of ordained students then chanted <em>Verses of Auspiciousness<\/em>. The Principal of <em>Sera Je Secondary School<\/em> gave a welcoming speech, and then a group of senior students of the school presented a discussion on <em>The three altruistic commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-764\" src=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-2.jpg\" alt=\"Visited-at-Sera-2\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche then addressed the gathering, explaining the kindnesses of all previous His Holiness the Dalai Lamas and in particular that of the present His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama; the importance of implementing into daily practice and life the advices by His Holiness, thus becoming the offering of implementation, the best way of delighting one\u2019s Teacher; the three altruistic commitments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-766\" src=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-4.jpg\" alt=\"Visited-at-Sera-4\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Rinpoche further explained in details that the internal fightings in Tibet, in the past in history, were not caused by spirituality (religion), rather by politics and power struggles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end the Headmaster of the school gave a speech expressing gratitude.Those who attended the inaugural function included the Local Commissioner of Justice (Tibetan Administration-in-Exile), the Heads of the local Settlements, Officials of the local Co-operative Societies, the Representative of the Honourable Abbot of <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em>, the Disciplinarian, The Chant-Leader, and many other dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-767\" src=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-5.jpg\" alt=\"Visited-at-Sera-5\" width=\"600\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/samdhongrinpoche.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Visited-at-Sera-5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>During the main Lecture Series, in the first session, the Director of <em>Sera Je Secondary School<\/em> gave an extensive explanation of the objectives of organising the Lecture Series. Thereafter, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche gave the first of the lectures, on the requested topics of \u201c<em>Traditional Education and Modern Education<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rinpoche explained in great details the understanding of what are meant by \u201cTraditional\u201d and \u201cModern\u201d; the drawbacks of modernity, the merits of the traditional, the differences between the two, the end results of the two; in particular, how modernity creates the five major inequalities; and other. Rinpoche then touched upon in details on the topic of <em>Traditional Education and Modern Education<\/em>, and answered the questions from the audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After lunch, Rinpoche visited the photographic display of His Holiness the Dalai Lama\u2019s\u00a0 biography, orgainsed by <em>Sera Je Secondary School<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the second session Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche gave the lecture on the topic of \u201c<em>The subjects and methodology of teachings, in the traditional and modern systems<\/em>\u201d, followed by questions and answers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the morning session of June 16, 2015 Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche explained that the modern Education system is that of globalisation and non-conscientious consumerism, and other details, followed by insights on the requested topic of \u201c<em>Traditional Teacher and Modern Teacher<\/em>\u201d. Rinpoche answered in details the questions from the students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prior to lunch, the teachers and staff members of <em>Sera Secondary School<\/em>, and the Editorial Board of the school\u2019s literary journal, had group photographs taken with Rinpoche. Likewise, prior to the start of the afternoon session, the students of the school had a group photograph taken with Rinpoche.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the afternoon session Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche gave an insightful lecture on the topic of \u201c<em>Traditional Student and Modern Student<\/em>\u201d, followed by questions and answers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end the Representative of the Honourable Abbot of <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em> gave a speech expressing gratitude.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the evening, as requested by <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em>, Rinpoche visited the daily dialectical debates at <em>Sera Je<\/em> debate-courtyard, and as well as went for a homage visit of the main prayer and gathering hall of <em>Sera Je Monastery<\/em>.
